Breckinridge, CO

We took our first ski trip as a family to Breckinridge between Christmas and New Years.  We were didn't know how the boys would do with skiing but they were AWESOME.  Picked it up so easily and enjoyed every minute of it.  It looks like we will have to go back next year!

Airport waiting.

                                                                       Seat buddies.

Beautiful

Only issue with flying is the 2.5 hour drive up to Breck.  We decided to bypass the rental car since we were walking distance to the slopes and village.  Here we are waiting for our shuttle. These guys were ready to just be there.

Traffic and snow made that ride no fun.  This was the beginning of the ride, there is no after picture.....

We also found out we needed to go pick up our equipment as they were too busy to deliver like planned.  It was good because we were able to familiarize ourselves with the area and slopes BUT as we started walking, Mason got a bad headache.  As you can see in the picture, he is quite pale.

He quickly developed altitude sickness and went downhill fast.  After getting our equipment and having him stand up to get measured, he ralphed in the store.  We had to carry all the things back and it wasn't the highlight of our trip.  Good news was it could ONLY go up from there.  Ha.

We all felt the altitude but Mason was hit the hardest.  He was sick the entire first night.  Brody got pretty dizzy and had a moment but recovered.  I couldn't sleep the first two nights.  And both John and I could hardly catch our breath.  Breckinridge is the highest mountain in CO and most everyone struggles here.  We stocked up on MANY O2 cans, bananas, water, and gatorade.  The day of travel certainly didn't help.

We had to make a decision and ended up leaving Mason back at the condo so we could grab dinner and some groceries on the way back (Uber Eats and Uber are VERY lacking here).

Breck is always just so gorgeous.

Our AirB&B host recommended this great pizza place.

We stopped by the grocery store and got essentials for the week.  We did have to carry it back so we didn't get too many things.  Figured we would need to return but we didn't!  Skiing wears you out and who cares what you eat for dinner.

We loved our cute condo and the location!

We had been so worried about the lack of snow leading up to the trip but they were dumped on the week of Christmas.  It ended up snowing SO much while we were there.
It was absolutely perfect!

Brody had ski school first thing the next morning.
We had to carry our skis the first day but were able to store them the days after.

Mason recovered and was ready to go!  His ski school could not be all day since he was 12 and not vaccinated, but our 9 year old was fine to go.

Rant: Covid rules get stupider and stupider.  The child had Covid in Sept, but I guess we don't think natural immunity is as good as a vaccine - funny stuff right there.

Mason got to start the morning with John and I while Brody went to all day ski school.

We made it up the lift and rewarded ourselves with hot chocolate!
That first lift of the morning always has a long line so we were frozen.

Mason did GREAT!  We were lucky enough to be on Peak 9 which has lots of greens.  In also has the A-lift half way up that takes you further up the mountain.  It was a PERFECT spot for us.

Our guide.

Last run down before his ski school.

John and I had an afternoon to ourselves.
(All the while wondering if Brody hated us: Was he cold?!  Did he hate the heights?!  Was he mad at us for leaving him ALL day?!  Ha)

We LOVED the greens and blues.
We didn't fall, we weren't miserably sore, and we could have a beverage every once in a while.
AND the kids thought we were great skiers (even me....which I'm actually terrible)
We will take what we can get this year because I'm sure they will be better than us the next time....

Picked them up from school.
Shockingly, Brody LOVED ski school and was not happy he couldn't go back the next day.  His instructor told us he did great, just have to make sure to slow down and not try to race everyone down the mountain.  Ha.

It was a bit of a waste for Mason since we had already taken him down that morning.
It was fine though and I think he learned more fundamentals.

We went back and decided to get out for dinner which was a mistake.
We were tired.  Ha

Day 2 and all as a family!
It was coming down the entire time we were there!

Lunch break

Day 3 - last day.

We took the higher lift up and it is was a site to see!

Happy as can be!

Trying to spray snow on me....

Big snow storm was headed in on our day out.  We were nervous about our flight and shuttle ride back to Denver.  Thankfully, the shuttle drivers know what they are doing and got us there safe and sound.  Thankful we chose a shuttle instead of rental!!

Until next time!

The trip was amazing.  It is such a great family trip because you are all doing an activity together the entire time.  Boys picked it up so well and said it was the best trip ever.  Since we have all the gear, we are hoping to go back next year.  It was such a great Christmas break spent together.
